S&C 2019 PREVIEW: Line-Up (Part 2)
In Part 2 of our S&C 2019 line up preview, we look at the second half of our music bill - featuring some acts that you may not yet have heard of, along with some legends from yesteryear, from up-and-coming house DJs to vintage UK Garage artists...
After 15 years building a name in the upper echelons of the UK dancehall scene, it was a natural progression for The Heatwave to start making music. Drawing on years of experience playing to crowds of all backgrounds, the boys have crafted a sound that stays true to dancehall foundations while adding their own unique London twist. Alongside their production, The Heatwave's explosive live performances have been a regular fixture at Notting Hill Carnival over the last 10 years, playing on trucks, sound systems and local afterparties.
They have become a bonafide ‘must-see’ feature on the UK summer festival circuit - playing Glastonbury, Lovebox, Reading and Leeds, Bestival and Boomtown in recent years - while continuing to host the legendary Hot Wuk, one of the UK's longest-running dancehall events. They’ve also held down the only dedicated dancehall show on London's Rinse FM since 2009, and their ever-popular mixes have over 2 million plays on Soundcloud. They work regularly in Jamaica, recording and collaborating with artists like Mr Vegas, Equiknoxx, Ding Dong and Mr Lexx. We can’t wait for the boys to join us in June and get us skanking along to some raucous riddims.
Cuppy is a DJ and Producer from Nigeria who has played in over 25 countries worldwide. In recent years, she has moved into producing and featuring on her own material - collaborating with some of Africa's biggest artists including Tekno and Sarkodi. Outside of DJing, she finds time to be a Nigerian ambassador for Tourism along with being the official DJ ambassador for Pepsi. Her tireless workrate bodes well for much more success in the near future, and we’re looking forward to seeing what she brings to the S&C stage this year.
We ‘Celebrate Heritage’ with double MOBO and Brit Award Winner Shola Ama this year at S&C, who will come out for part of Artful Dodger’s set to perform some of her biggest hits. If you don't remember her tune "You Might Need Somebody", we guarantee your older siblings or parents will. She was the queen of UK R&B in her day but she didn't stop there. The Asylum Remix of her song “Imagine” is one of the all time UK Garage greats, a timeless classic of its generation and a scene-defining track. If you don't already know, you will get to know on June 15th.
Sweet Female Attitude
One word - FLOWERS! Talking of Garage classics, not many come closer to being the ultimate UKG tune than Sweet Female Attitude’s ‘Flowers’, produced by legendary beat craftsmen Sunship. After countless plays in clubs, pubs and at house parties down the years, we are very excited to hear this one live. It may provide one of the most memorable moments of S&C 2019.
What even is Strawberries & Creem without our favourite DJ duo Star.One. They were the first act we booked back in 2014 when it all began, and they’ve been part of our journey ever since - featuring on every S&C line-up thus far. The brothers always bring the heat to the decks and refuse to stick to one genre - mixing and blending between Garage, Grime, Jungle and more. They’ve also worked with the likes of P Money and D Double E. Last year, they brought through a whole range of MC's to bring the energy levels in the big top tent to boiling point and you can expect the same again this time.
Mollie Collins & Carasel
Few DJs have experienced such a meteoric rise as Mollie Collins - rapidly transitioning from a weekly residency in a pub on a Monday night, to touring across the country and presenting her own Drum & Bass show on Kiss FM. Armed with a catalogue of exclusives, dubs and of course the trusty MC Carasel providing the hype on the mic, Mollie is set to tear the roof off the Big Top Tent to close the night off this June. Be sure to wear comfy shoes, this one can cause blisters!
Returning to the main stage once again to ensure the party vibes are in full flow is London’s Cardinal Sound. Originally of Cambridge roots, the young producer has supported everyone from The Prodigy to Stormzy, and played in world-renowned venues including Fabric, XOYO and Sankeys. Off the back of his debut single with Grime veteran Killa P, Cardinal Sound has paved a way for himself through producing, weekly radio slots on Reprezent (with guests there including Shy FX, Crazy Cousinz, Roska and more recently Med School’s Whiney) and a busy club show schedule (you can catch him at five other festivals this Summer!) We look forward to having him grace the main stage once again with a unique blend of danceable Drum & Bass...
Few wordsmiths are able to make eating a Greggs sausage roll poetic, but Nottingham’s Window Kid is the exception. Part of the Crucast collective, Window Kid has established himself among the top tier of Bassline vocalists along with label mate Bru-C, having featured on tunes by Champion, Hedex + Darkzy. An extensive touring schedule with the Crucast gang has allowed him to hone his craft on stage into a show full of antics & hard bars - we anticipate this one to cause offense! Catch him with Darkzy in the Big Top.
The non stop energy of the Late Replies boys makes it difficult for you not to love these guys. If you've seen them play at the previous 2 editions Strawberries & Creem you'll understand exactly what we mean. Our resident DJs and instrumental behind the growth of the third stage, Josh and Kas continue to make bold moves playing at the biggest venues up and down the country and regularly supporting some of the hottest names in the game including PAWSA, Solardo and Darius Syrossian and they show no sign of slowing up.
Kaluki's very own ALISHA is a house music producer and DJ from Peterborough, and is well and truly putting her home city on the map. She regularly steals the show in some of the industries most respected hot spots, from Studio 338 to Warehouse project. ALISHA's unique style, high energy and technical ability that she injects into every one of her sets ensure she secures her name on mammoth line ups - and she has been turning heads of promoters, party gowers and nowadays even the most established selectors in the game! If you fancy flicking a wrist and shaking a hip to some of the best beats on offer, our House Stage is the place to be this year...
Made You Look
Tyler and Shaq will be returning to S&C as DJs for the third year running now, and they more than anyone have spearheaded the growth of our House stage. The duo know their music inside out and have a God-given talent of knowing how to work a crowd. Like many successful DJs before them, they developed a love for their craft through starting out on the other side of the turntables - and their love of the music is palpable. Their naturally uplifting energy is present throughout their sets, and they’ve supported some huge names over the past year - including FISHER, Patrick Topping and Steve Lawler. They've arguably had the biggest crowd on our house stage two years running, which is testament to how good these guys are!
This Danish DJ double-act have played at almost every big event across Europe - including Sonar Barcelona and Amsterdam Dance Event. They appear regularly on huge brands’ line-ups - most notably Solid Grooves and Viva Warriors - along with hosting their own show on Ibiza Global Radio. The girls are mesmerising to watch when they’re behind the decks, and like the rest of the DJs we have selected this year they’re sure to bring serious energy to keep our House stage pumping all day long.
We welcome Cambridge party starters and all round good blokes Sabotage Audio to the Strawberries & Creem lineup this year, to ensure we accommodate appropriately for those more bass-weight inclined. These gentlemen are no strangers to a good time, having previously brought Chimpo, DJ Q, Royal T, Serum, Darkzy and Heist to their shows, and they make a habit of filling up clubs across the city. Look out for their set in the Big Top Tent, it’s sure to be a belter.
So there we have it - a full preview of all the acts on this year’s S&C line-up (you can read Part 1 here, covering our headliners and the top half of the bill). This has got us even more excited for June 15th now!
